Feedback based automatic control has been a key enabling technology for many technological advances over the past 80 years. New application domains, like autonomous cars driving on automated highways, energy distribution via smart grids, life in smart cities or the new production paradigm Industry 4.0 do, however, require a new type of cybernetic systems and control theory that goes beyond some of the classical ideas. Starting from the concept of feedback and its significance in nature and technology, we will present in this talk some new developments and challenges in connection to the control of today's and tomorrow’s intelligent systems.

Frank Allgöwer is director of the Institute for Systems Theory and Automatic Control at the University of Stuttgart. Frank's main interests in research and teaching are in the area of systems and control with a current emphasis on the development of new methods for optimization-based control, networks of systems and data-based control. Frank received several recognitions for his work including the IFAC Outstanding Service Award, the IEEE CSS Distinguished Member Award, the State Teaching Award of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, and the Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Frank is President of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and Vice-President of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is also a member of the executive board of the IMPRS for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart/Tübingen.
