ELLIS - European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems

ELLIS is a pan-European AI network of excellence. It builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure lasting international leadership of AI made in Europe by connecting more than 1, 000 top researchers in this field and by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory connecting world-class AI research institutions in Europe. Founded in 2018, ELLIS has grown into a network that counts 43 ELLIS sites in 17 countries, 16 ELLIS programs and a pan-European PhD program.

ELLIS Institute Tübingen

The ELLIS Institute Tübingen is set to become a world-renowned center for pioneering basic research in the field of artificial intelligence. The Institute aims to attract the world's best machine learning talent, providing them with outstanding conditions to conduct research in a state-of-the-art facility located in Tübingen, Germany. The vision is part of a broader initiative, ELLIS Society, which aims to build a pan-European institution for machine learning research.

Tübingen AI Center

The Tübingen AI Center is a research institute at the University of Tübingen in cooperation with our institute. The goal of the researchers is to advance robust learning systems for the benefit of society and the economy. The Center's 250 scientists are organized in 20 research groups. They contribute, with other researchers in Europe, towards socially valuable technologies and "AI made in Europe".

Max Planck & Amazon Science Hub

The Max Planck Amazon Science Hub is a science cooperation launched by the Max Planck Society and Amazon in 2022. The collaboration marks the first Amazon Science Hub outside the United States and focuses on advancing research and development throughout Germany. The Science Hub’s goal is to advance the state-of-the-art in domains ranging from sustainability to automated reasoning to AI.

Robotics Institute Germany

The Robotics Institute Germany is an initiative by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aimed at connecting leading robotics labs across Germany to enhance their international visibility, attract talent, and accelerate progress in AI-powered robotics. Our institute takes many roles in this initiative: from participating in thematic clusters and pushing the thresholds of robotics research, to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion via the RIGI internship program, and overseeing annual prizes for outstanding thesis works in the field of AI-powered robotics.

Bionic Intelligence Tübingen Stuttgart (BITS)

The Center for Bionic Intelligence Tübingen Stuttgart (BITS) was founded in 2023. The center's broad and pioneering research spans from developing robotic orthoses to in-body micro- and nano-robots, aiming to transform diagnostics, therapy and quality of life for patients with neurological limitations using various intelligent systems. The initiative is currently awaiting the decision for new Excellence Clusters.

It strives to use machine learning to enable and accelerate scientific discoveries.

Cluster of Excellence "SimTech"

Since 2019, the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075 "Data-Integrated Simulation Science," which is part of the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science, has been addressing a multitude of novel research challenges. This initiative focuses on leveraging the insights and knowledge obtainable from the vast amounts of data generated by sensors, digitized collections, experiments, and simulations.

Cluster of Excellence "Image-guided and Functionally Instructed Tumor Therapies"

The Cluster of Excellence 2180 "Image-guided and Functionally Instructed Tumor Therapies" (iFIT) is the only oncology cluster of excellence in Germany. Since January 1, 2019, internationally renowned scientists and talented young researchers have been working together in this consortium in a globally unique collaboration of three different research areas here in Tuebingen to shape the future of cancer research.
