We are part of the Max Planck Society, a scientific organization that conducts research in Germany and internationally.
Our institute spans two campuses in Stuttgart and Tübingen, working together toward a common goal: advancing the frontiers of artificial intelligence and robotics. By combining our expertise, we explore the fundamental principles of intelligent systems from multiple perspectives.
Scientists at our Stuttgart site focus on the physical realization of intelligent systems, researching in the fields of robotic materials, haptic intelligence, soft robotics, and bio-inspired robotics. Research at our Tübingen site focuses on theoretical and computational aspects of intelligent systems, covering topics such as machine learning, computer vision, control, and societal aspects of artificial intelligence.
Campus Overview Research Overview
At the heart of our institute are the people who drive our research, innovation, and collaboration across our two campuses in Stuttgart and Tübingen. About 600 people, including scientists, students, technical experts and administrative staff, work together in the dynamic environment of MPI-IS. Through our alumni network, former members of our institute can stay in touch with our community.

At the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, we are driven by a shared passion for advancing the frontiers of science and improving the world around us. Our core values are the foundation of our work and our interactions with each other and with the world around us. We believe in treating each other with respect, acting with integrity and communicating openly and transparently. We value diversity, creativity, and scientific excellence and strive to create a collaborative and inclusive environment that fosters innovation and growth. By living these values, we aim to make a positive impact on society and inspire future generations.
Code of Conduct
The joint interests of the institute as a whole are subject to the scientific and administrative management of the Board of Directors. The members of the Board of Directors select a Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the institute who execute the daily affairs. The Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the institute as a whole are simultaneously Managing Directors of their respective local institute site. The institute currently has five directors.
(Managing Director, Stuttgart)
(Managing Director, Tübingen)
Our institute is guided by two advisory boards appointed by the President of the Max Planck Society: the Board of Trustees, providing a strong interface to society, industry, and academia and the Scientific Advisory Board, ensuring the highest scientific standards through regular evaluations by esteemed international experts.

Directions
The Max Planck Society is a non-university institution dedicated to fundamental research, predominantly publicly funded. The Max Planck Society is Germany's most successful research organization, ranking among the world's top institutions with a high impact of publications in renowned scientific journals. The foundation of its success is its focus on people-centered research, which allows leading researchers to define their topics and work under optimal conditions. The Max Planck Institutes, which cover a wide range of disciplines, conduct basic research in innovative and challenging fields. They continuously develop the research agenda of the Max Planck Society to address cutting-edge scientific issues.

The MPI for Intelligent Systems emerged in 2011 from the MPI for Metals Research, which was founded in 1921. The social and political changes that led to the collapse of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi seizure of power and the Second World War, the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German economic miracle and an increasingly technological and digital world that can no longer do without artificial intelligent systems – all this is reflected in our history. As different as the research conditions have been, it has always been about basic research at the highest international level – for more than 100 years.
