The joint interests of the institute as a whole are subject to the scientific and administrative management of the Board of Directors. The institute currently has five directors.
The members of the Board of Directors select a Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the institute who execute the daily affairs. The Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the institute as a whole are simultaneously Managing Directors of their respective local institute site.

The Board of Trustees consists of representatives from various sectors, including politics, industry, academia, and media, who are appointed by the President of the Max Planck Society and serve in an honorary capacity.
