Shuaizhong Zhang receives Humboldt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Stuttgart – Dr. Shuaizhong Zhang’s work focuses on the design and fabrication of mobile biomedical microrobots with integrated remote localization and local sensing capabilities, to endow these microrobots with paramount functionalities including targeted navigation, autonomous cargo release and minimally invasive microsurgery. Shuaizhong worked on microscale magnetic artificial cilia for fluid and particle manipulation in microfluidic devices during his doctoral research.  He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, in 2019. Afterwards, he participated in an ERC Advanced Grant project as a postdoctoral research for one-year in the same group. On January 1, 2021, he joined the Physical Intelligence Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Stuttgart the support of a two-year Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers.

I have been attracted by the fascinating and high-impact work of this group for years in building the next-generation small-scale biomedical robots," says Shuaizhong. Sitti heads the Physical Intelligence Department, which he founded in 2014 at the Stuttgart site of the MPI-IS.

Each year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants approximately 500 fellowships to postdoctoral researchers of all nationalities and disciplines from abroad. They must have above average qualifications, be at the beginning of their academic career and have only completed their doctorate in the past four years. A Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows the awardee to carry out long-term research of six months to two years in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host.
